We can finish what they started
Any child in need of a supportive home means something needs to change. Bennett Chapel recognized this crisis and stepped forward in courage and faith. Once we encounter the reality that there are still hundreds of thousands of children in the foster system today…how will we respond?
The Crisis
There are almost 400,000 children in the U.S. foster system. 100,000 of these kids are waiting to be adopted. And each year, government child protection agencies are alerted to 7 million kids who have experienced maltreatment. But at the same time, children who have been in the foster system are at higher risk for trafficking, criminal justice issues and homelessness. If we want to build thriving neighborhoods and compassionate communities, we need to start with the foster system.
The Solution
Yes, the numbers are dire, but look around: There are so many people ready to help. And kids are worth fighting for! We don’t need a few folks doing a lot. We need many doing what they can, rising up together. We need people willing to meet needs, serve hurting families and strengthen them before they break. We need more well-prepared foster and adoptive families. And we need whole communities, including churches, wrapped around those families, committed to supporting them as they create the kinds of homes that kids deserve.
Imagine healthy, resourced local foster systems—foster systems where every kid who needed a supportive home, for a while or forever, would be assured one. Bennett Chapel taught us it’s possible. How will you help?
