Becoming a foster/adoptive parent

Requirements and details differ depending on your location, but in general, foster and adoptive parents follow this pathway:

  1. Connect with a local agency Your area will have licensed adoption agencies, state foster associations and local children and family services departments. (We can help you get connected with the form below.) Your local agency will walk you through the details you need to know to take the next right step, including training sessions available in your area.
  2. Home study Both foster and adoptive families go through extensive reviews, including background checks, references, assessments and home safety evaluations. The details will differ by agency and state, but the goal is the same: Ensuring foster/adopt families are able to provide secure, positive homes.
  3. Apply for license/certification. Once you’ve completed the home study and required training, your agency will help you complete the license or certification you need to be an official foster/adopt parent.
  4. Placement Your agency will match you with potential children in need of your care, support, encouragement and love. Then the real journey begins as you get to know your child/children, prepare for their arrival, gather your support system and welcome them home.

Brave families. Big love.

We can’t #endthefostercrisis without families willing to open their homes and lives to children in the foster system. Foster families stand in the gap, providing safe homes for children while their biological families work toward reunification. When that restoration isn’t possible or safe, adoptive families offer forever homes and lasting security for children in need. Fostering and adoption are serious commitments that families should weigh carefully; it takes skill, perseverance and community support to love well.
